JOSE GUMBS

José Gumbs is a former NFL Football Player. He was born to Dominican parents Brooklyn, NY and grew up in Queens, from Dominican Parents. He began playing football at Hebron Academy and continued onto college football for Monmouth University with a scholarship.

In college football he won the awards “Rookie of the Year” and “Defensive Player of the year”. He was signed by the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2012 (the year after the “Saints” won the Super Bowl).

While playing with the Saints he suffered a wrist fracture, which needed surgery and was cut from the team. When he was healthy again, he was signed by the Washington Redskins and he made his NFL debut in Week 6 against the Dallas Cowboys. In his second career game, Gumbs made an explosive special teams tackle against the kick returner Eric Weems. He would have his first career start against the Denver Broncos in Week 8. Gumbs made his first career interception against Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan. He was released from the team on May 2014.

José Gumbs’ parents are from San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic. He has 2 brothers and one sister. 8 years ago his mother assumed foster care for 3 siblings that were abandoned and decided to adopt them, all of the kids have learning disabilities. Gumbs mother is also fostering a one year old baby girl at the moment.

His Mother and Sister were the ones who encouraged him to sign up for Exatlon. The entire family watches the show and his sister did the online application.

As a curious note, Gumbs uncle is an ex baseball player named Norberto Martin who was in the Chicago White Sox.
